Set on the hillside of Settignano (Italy) with extraordinary views of Florence and the surrounding Arno valley, Villa Gamberaia is renowned for its splendid gardens, celebrated throughout the world by leading landscape architects and garden historians.
Completed in the early seventeenth century by the Florentine noble Zanobi Lapi in Tuscan style, the Villa combines interesting architectural features of both an urban palazzo and a suburban villa. In the eighteenth century, the property belonged to the Marchesi Capponi, and by that time the house and gardens had acquired the characteristic elements seen in the famous engraving by Giuseppe Zocchi (1744): the cypress alley, bowling green, nymphaeum, grotto garden, parterre and lemon garden.
At the end of nineteenth century, Princess Catherine Jeanne Ghika began the transformation of the parterre de broderie into the beautiful parterre d’eau, enclosed at its southern end by a majestic cypress arcade. Elegant expressions of topiary art were created by Mathilda Ledyard Cass, Baroness von Ketteler, in the following decades. Following the partial destruction of the Villa during the Second World War, Gamberaia was acquired in 1954 by Marcello Marchi, whose family had founded important Italian industries and owned other historic properties in Tuscany. In 1994 the Villa passed to his daughter Franca Marchi and her husband Luigi Zalum, who have continued the work of conservation and restoration.
Four houses on the property have been carefully restored and converted into comfortable guest houses, furnished with family antiques but also equipped with modern appliances and conveniences. There are the apartments Cappella and Nettuno (along the garden avenue), the first belonging originally to the 17th century chapel, and the second is named after the so-called Neptune statue in the nymphaeum; the Limonaia is an historic 15th century farmhouse, which belonged to the family of the Florentine sculptor and architect Bernardo Rossellino. Eremita is a small and nice apartment, into the grove near the grotto garden.
